BIENNALE 2022 FOR APPLIED ART AT THE MUSEUM OF HAMBURG HISTORY
INSPIRATION HISTORY: MERCHANT'S ACCOUNT FROM THE 16TH CENTURY
Hamburg merchants are said to be rather reluctant to display their wealth with ostentatious pomp. Honesty, transparency, and Hanseatic understatement They are considered virtues and ideals.
An appreciation for materials, craftsmanship, and tradition. Solidity paired with the desire for something beautiful. Solid gold and silver as a functional investment. Luxury that is not excessive and fulfills a purpose.
These points inspired me to create a fountain pen that, due to its materiality and understated form, incorporates many of these historical approaches.

I chose this special piece for the opening of the MK&G Trade fair 2021, one of the most prestigious trade fairs for contemporary arts and crafts Made in Europe.
Mokume Gane is a 300-year-old Japanese blacksmithing technique, which combines different precious metals into a single surface. Mokume Gane literally means... "Wood structure in metal", because the pattern of the surface structure resembles a fine wood grain.
The exquisite ELBWOOD fountain pens made of Mokume Gane are a true rarity, as Frank Pressentin is the only fountain pen manufacturer in the world who produces writing instruments from solid Mokume Gane.
